Lilanga's Painting, Framed in Wood

Figures with large ears twist and mingle across a surface painted in primary colors. The lower left of the canvas bears the signature “H. lilanga,” while the back is marked with a Swahili sentence and the words “BY. HENDRY LILANGA 2019.”

The sentence on the back, “Baba akilewa ni mkorofi, na akiambiwa ukweli anaona kama anaonewa!” roughly means: “When a father gets drunk, he becomes troublesome, and when he is told the truth, he thinks he is being treated unfairly.” The humorous painting contains a satire of everyday life.

Woodway placed these paintings in black frames and light-colored solid-wood frames, then displayed them standing on round wood slices.
