On May 25, 2023, a container loaded with African blackwood logs arrived in front of Woodway’s warehouse. When the doors opened, short-cut log sections were stacked tightly all the way to the far end.

African blackwood does not grow particularly large, and its trunk twists, so its logs do not come out long and straight. As a result, even a single container is packed with sections of varying sizes and shapes.

Because the wood is heavier than water, not even a single section is light. A compact excavator lifted the logs out of the container, and the workers transported them into the warehouse using handcarts.

After the logs unloaded onto the warehouse floor are sorted according to their size and condition, they are dried and made into boards, turning blanks, and slices.
